Inspired by Pohutukawa - a Maori name for a coastal evergreen tree also known as NZ Christmas Tree in New Zealand. This is for a one-of-a-kind / unique / ready-made necklace chain with a Mother of Pearl MOP (Nacre) pendant accompanied by an independent bundle of flower pods - that turns and is retractable. Handcrafted from patinated Sterling Silver and sustainable MOP. The Mother of Pearl was carved, polished then riveted in 4 places (where you see the small dots) with a silver backing giving it an industrial look which I love.

Why sustainable? The Mother of Pearl was an old piece of plain antique gaming coin made in the 19th century for playing board games, which I've used to cut and sculpt into a leaf.

I love nature and somehow have an inkling need to replicate it into wearable art, to somehow immortalise the mortal beauty and mystery. There are often tiny holes in the leaves of Pohutukawa caused by a native insect, a leaf miner weevil, called Neomycta Rubida. The larvae of this weevil eat new leaves and the beetle (the adult stage) makes the holes in the leaves.

NOTE: The Silver has been oxidised for a dark grey finish that isn't permanent, as overtime it'll eventually fade leaving you a patina finish. It can be re-oxidised at home if ever you'd like it to return to the darkened look.

• Mother of Pearl pendant in its entirety: 3.3cm long x 2.3cm wide
• The Pod pendant; 3.4cm long x 9mm wide (each floral face)
• The Mother of Pearl was repurposed from an antique gaming coin which I've cut, polished and riveted onto a Silver back
• Handcrafted by me from my atelier between Paris & Marseille, France.
